Spanish Language programming celebrates Gwinnett’s diverse culture

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (September 9, 2015) – The joys and frustrations unique to single ladies of all ages come to light in this wacky modern tale. Even matters of the heart are examined through a comedic lens in Gustavo Ott’s Divorciadas, Evangélicas y Vegetarianas (Divorcées, Evangelists, and Vegetarians) at Aurora Theatre running September 25 – October 18, 2015. September 25 – October 18, 2015. Performed in Spanish with English Supertitles, this play expertly finds the funny in uncomfortable situations and blunt truths.

“Earlier this year, Aurora received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to deepen our relationship with the Latino community by expanding programing. Additionally, we received funding from BrandMortage to produce this show. I am very proud of our commitment to producing plays in Spanish,” said Producing Artistic Director Anthony Rodriguez. “As our community grows and changes, we need to work harder to make everyone feel welcome at Aurora. Teatro Aurora is one of the great ways we make the arts accessible for ALL people. ”

Internationally acclaimed and award-winning Venezuelan playwright, Gustavo Ott’s Divorciadas, Evangélicas y Vegetarianas  has been performed in New York, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Mexico, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Argentina, Poland, Brazil and Peru. Audiences will follow the antics of divorcée Beatriz, who is at her wits’ end; Gloria, a pushy vegetarian with tons of personal baggage; and the evangelical Meche, a menopausal widow. These friends will help each other through personal crisis… if they can keep from killing each other first!

The play will be directed by guest artist, Abigail Vega, Latina/o Theatre Commons Producer, as well as Managing Director and an Ensemble Member of Teatro Luna—America’s Pan Latina Theatre Company in Chicago. Taking on these whimsical characters are Michelle Rivera (Gloria), Irma Cristancho (Meche) and Ilia DeJesús (Beatriz), a recent graduate of Aurora’s Apprentice Company.  Male or female, whether you speak Spanish or not, you won’t want to miss this fast-paced comic romp through the lives of three exceptionally eccentric women.

On Thursday, October 8, Aurora Theatre will host a Community Conversationfrom 7:15– 7:55 p.m. with a panel of experts discussing Identity vs. Identification: Are Women Limiting Themselves with Self-Imposed Labels? Admission to the event is FREE for anyone who wishes to join the conversation. Tickets to the post-conversation performance are currently on sale and subject to availability.
